Whistle Up Units 1 and 2 - Free Access

Whistle Up! is a musical initiative for primary schools by The SAGE Gateshead and www.tuned-in.org . It supports the Wider Opportunities initiative at KS2, and aims to develop children's confidence, competence and enthusiasm through performing together as members of a folk ensemble.

In the introductory unit, Northumbrian whistle player Joey Oliver introduces children and their teachers to the fun of playing tin whistle. Joey plays whistle and oboe with 422, winners of the 1999 Radio 2 Young Folk award.

In this introductory unit, children learn:

* About the whistle and other woodwind instruments
* How to hold the whistle
* Correct positioning of fingers
* To work towards playing with a balanced and relaxed posture
* To produce a clear note with a pleasing tone quality
* To control their breathing

In the follow-up unit, Joey Oliver introduces children and their teachers to playing Mary Had a Little Lamb.

Children:

* Learn new notes A and G
* Play a copycat game
* Learn how to make a "T" sound
* Learn how to play a Rondo
* Learn new notes F sharp, E and D
