Narrative Ideas

Zozo’s stories demonstrate aspects of myths and fables. The following activities have been written with the Giraffe’s Neck (CD Rom: Stories and Rhymes) in mind. The Giraffe’s Neck could inspire children to write their own stories focusing on animals’ defining characteristics: giraffe-neck, kangaroo-hop, rhinoceros-horn, lion-mane, tiger-stripes etc, describing how an animal gained one its features.

It would be helpful if children have already studied the characteristics of creatures featured on the CD Rom in the Meet the Animals and Spaces and Places sections.

Carnaval Art Unit

Animals and Musicians in Action

In the QCA Art exemplar Unit 6A People in Action, children explore techniques for depicting movement in their own work as well as that of other artists. They explore dynamic activities such as sport, dance, drama and music as starting points for two-dimensional work.

Keriana Tracey’s interpretation demonstrates how Carnaval can provide an excellent focus, as Saint-Saens explores the ways both animals and musicians behave and move in intriguing ways.

Carnaval Design and Technology Unit

The QCA D&T Unit 6A ‘Shelters’ teaches children about structures and the frameworks that support them - how to construct, strengthen, load and fail them. Children learn about the materials, fabrics and textiles best suited to covering the structures.

This unit of work presented by Keriana Tracey specifically focuses on bird aviaries, by the end of which pupils should be confident to make models from their designs.

Although aimed at upper KS2, it is easily adapted for younger children by limiting the detail of independent research. The unit is split into 6 lessons, each averaging around one hour (but allow more time for construction).
