* Correct positioning of fingers
    * To work towards playing with a balanced and relaxed posture
    * To produce a clear note with a pleasing tone quality
    * To control their breathing

In the follow-up unit, Joey Oliver introduces children and their teachers to playing Mary Had a Little Lamb.

The story of Safiya and the Elephant came about from work with children in a Cumbria school. Pupils in the school had listened to African stories, explored techniques in African art and had taken part in a workshop on West African drumming. Children at KS1 had explored African riddles, composing and sharing their own with friends. Reception children had listened to an African lullabies, and developed language to contribute to a lullaby.

It links with the ICreaTe project taking place in Lancashire schools. ICreaTe will address cross phase issues, and develop creative learning, both in music and across the wider curriculum. It signals new possibilities for participation in music beyond the classroom, and provides on line and face to face training for primary and secondary colleagues.

This unit uses: Sony Acid Xpress, Rhythm Maker, Compose World, Windows Media Recorder and VanBasco Karaoke.

In this year’s programme children learn to
- play djembe and other percussion within a drumming group;
- sing a range of West African and Caribbean songs;
- memorise and perform musical patterns through African and Caribbean drum languages;
- compose and perform accompaniments for African dances and songs;
- use software to develop and notate their own compositions;
- create and perform music as an integral part of African storytelling.

      And what did the teachers say?
(comments from the pilot schools)
Teachers suddenly found that music was not beyond their capabilites. The ICT level made them feel comfortable and relaxed in a way that traditional music opportunities do not.
The project has left us wanting more – more drumming, more music and more of the wonderful ideas provided by this sort of project!
The pace was excellent, as teachers could develop the lesson, making sections shorter or longer as was necessary.
Everything ‘slotted’ together so easily.
The lesson plans are straightforward and deliverable and the video clips and resources on the smart board are excellent.
The drumming project was a great success and we got so much out of it. I will certainly be drumming with my new class!

Ability and age range
Suitable for all my KS2 children, easy to adapt to different ages and abilities. Every single child in the class looked forward to and benefited from the drumming sessions. It suited all different needs and abilities. The boys were engaged at all times.
Catered extremely well for auditory, kinaesthetic and visual learners. Children who did not participate in music previously have been fully involved
Special needs children were not handicapped in any way and reflected complete enjoyment.
The approach was genuinely inclusive!

Curriculum and other links
This was certainly a ‘wider opportunity’!
The learning opportunities provided have widened our scope for delivery and allowed us to develop a whole range of new learning possibilities. We have linked it into the music, geography and literacy to very good effects.
The sessions provided us with the opportunity to look at different parts of the world, discuss the language in the songs and talk about different cultures.
Stories, songs and rhythms opened up rich cross curricular possibilities
There is a real enthusiasm for sustaining drumming, to include involvement with musical providers in the community.
The collaboration we had with other schools was enough to inspire us to make permanent links.

E-learning in music and dance
Cumbria Music Service works with exceptional performing artists to promote exciting opportunities in music and dance. We believe there is no substitute
for contact with inspirational performers.

Our unique programmes connect workshop visits to schools with carefully planned e-learning, ensuring real progression and continuity.

Why e-learning?
Performances and workshops from creative practitioners can really inspire, leaving children and their teachers wanting more.

We wanted to develop a way that teachers could build effectively on these rich experiences.

The African Drumming package is the first in a series of performance and resource packages.

Each programme follows a similar format. Workshop sessions with performing musicians in your school connect with our extensive CD-rom based materials,
introduced by the artists themselves.

Carefully developed video and audio examples present ongoing musical challenges, while consolidating and building on existing learning. These are reinforced with practice materials and relevant ICT applications.

Through these innovative resources, artists accompany children throughout their musical journey.

Programmes provide work for between a term and a full year’s work based on the theme and concludes with a live performance by the children. The programme can be delivered in a single school or with a number of schools working together and staging a joint final performance..

      Tuned-in is a not for profit subscription service for UK schools produced by Cumbria County Council. It is an exciting new venture aimed at maximising the potential of the internet to promote Music and the Arts in schools in imaginative and practical ways.

ICT enables pupils to listen to, and interact with music within virtual historical, social and cultural contexts through the written and spoken word, images and sound. Although at present the focus is on music in the curriculum, it is hoped that other arts areas will be addressed in the near future.

System Requirements
Hardware:

    To access all the facilities of tuned-in you will need:

    * Pentium class Multimedia PC with Windows 95 or later.
    * Internet access
    * Soundcard
    * Speakers
    * Various plug ins (available free on this site)
    * ESP music Compose World Junior software for some applications.

      Soundcard
      The soundcard is essential to the quality of musical playback and recording on your computer. Consult your ICT support service for advice on purchasing and fitting sound cards. See also the BECTa Choosing and Using Guide 2

    Speakers
    A good set of speakers make an enormous difference to the quality of the sound Speakers supplied as part of a computer package tend to be poor (although this is not always the case). Consider speakers with an additional bass subwoofer. These are favoured by computer gamers.

Soundfiles and Compose World Junior
Tuned-in uses midi, mp3 and wav soundfiles.
Please ensure that you have set up Windows Media Player™ for these formats.

Compose World Junior files are also used on certain units. To play these you must have CWJ installed on your PC. This is available from Tuned-in. Please email info@tuned-in.org and quote reference KH2000. Andy Pierson has written an informative article introducing this software in our Articles section.

Frequently Asked Questions
01. Isn't the use of computers going to be a nightmare in terms of organisation, time and resources?
This assumes:
1. that there is a need to have access several machines
2. that computer access needs to be permanently on hand.
The majority of the materials were written with the use of a single computer in mind.
In general, the activities presented on the pupil pages are intended for use as an introduction or follow-up to activities to take place with voices and instruments away from the computer. Clearly, the use of a data projector, or connection to a television screen might be advantageous.

02. How do these materials reflect OFSTED recommendations for good practice?
1. The web materials make plentiful suggestions for musical activity
2. Teaching focuses are clear, and suggested musical learning planned with regard to the full range of pupils' musical development (e.g. opportunities for performing, composing, listening and appraising are clearly set out)
3. Activities build on pupils' prior learning.
4. Materials address differentiation
5. Materials highlight the need to develop technical skills, providing opportunities to practise these. Teacher's notes provide suggestions for developing these (e.g using the voice)
6. Pupils are taught to be informed consumers of music, and are encouraged to listen to music in a critical and analytical fashion.

03. How do these materials relate to other curricular guidelines?
Appropriate and clearly defined links are made with the National Curriculum and QCA guidance in a range of subjects including literacy, numeracy, ICT, RE. and elements of PSHE.

04. How can these activities extend musical opportunities with outside agencies, including County Instrumental Services, and visits by professional musicians and performing groups?
Wherever possible, activities make reference to the work of living composers and the work of professional musicians and education-focussed groups.
For example The Carnival of the Animals is linked to school performances by the Cumbria Instrumental Support Service.
